Terbutaline is a drug used for chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases like asthma and emphysema. However, it may also be used as a remedy to pre-term labor. It acts as a muscle relaxant and prevents the uterus from contracting and to delay the delivery of a premature baby. Prior to when studies have not been made about the possible effects of terbutaline to an unborn child, the medication is used without restrictions. The US Food and Drug Administration recently warned against the prolonged use of injectable terbutaline to prevent pre-term labor. The drug must only be used for as much as 72 hours because it could already pose significant health risks to an unborn baby if the period of treatment exceeded beyond that time. Furthermore, it is decided that there are more risks involved in treating pre-term labor with terbutaline than there are benefits.
