I’ve been a freelance writer since 1993 and starting writing SEO content for clients in 2007. When I first got started in this niche, it was all about keywords. As in, clients would basically give you a set of keywords and give you free reign to write what you wanted – as long as it showed their company in a good light and was beneficial to the end user (ie, web surfers).

Back then, clients knew that keyword-rich articles drove web traffic (and sales), so they’d commission SEO writers to pump it out in great volume. Search engine optimization is maturing as an industry though. And, one of the main changes I see happening as an SEO writer is that clients are investing in “SEO content strategies.” What is this?

What Is a Content Strategy?

Wikipedia defines a content strategy as “the practice of planning for content creation, delivery, and governance” and “a repeatable system that defines the entire editorial content development process for a website development project.”

Freelance SEO Writers: 3 Reasons a Content Strategy Means More Work & Higher Pay for You

If you’re an SEO writer, you want clients who have developed a content strategy because it signals good things for you, namely:

(i) You’ll develop long-term clients: When clients have a plan for their content, they tend to think in terms of “campaigns” rather than one-off articles. And, if you’re the SEO writer they hire, you’ll likely be around for a while.

(i) You’ll get more SEO writing jobs from clients like this: When clients think in terms of campaigns, they tend to order more content. More content means more work for you as an SEO copywriter.

(iii) You can charge more for writing SEO content: You’ll be able to charge more because clients are going to want more in-depth content. You see, search engines like Google reward content that is well-rounded, not just stuffed with a certain keyword phrase.

Also, search engines are trending towards ranking longer content. No more short, keyword-stuffed articles that say practically nothing which are written just to get a page to the top of search results. Search engines are smarter now.

Conclusion

The bottom line is, companies are pouring more and more of their marketing dollars into search engine optimization. And, content marketing is getting a huge share of these dollars. All of this means it’s a great time to be an SEO writer.

When you build an internet marketing reviews website, you want to include your story in the About Us page as part of copywriting tips for your website. If you go back to when did you first get interested in whatever your business is about, what made you start it? Where were you having issues? Maybe that story is like you were having the same problems that your perfect target market was having. You couldn’t find a business that you were happy with that provided a good enough solution. So you thought, Enough! I’m going to go out there and create my own business.

Then you set it up and from humble beginnings, I started off and I did it in my bedroom and started off very small. Over time we started to grow and more and more people started to hear about how great we are and we started to build. Then we moved into an office.

That story in promoting online business like aweber review is inside of you and you want to draw that out. It’s almost like you take the person on that emotional roller coaster and journey with you. I think storytelling, and sales copy, are all intertwined. You want to make sure that you get good at telling stories.

Then you can put the FAQ. Part of the reason we included a FAQ was because when we got the merchant facilities, Westpac required us to answer a whole bunch of different questions, what is our refund policy and all that type of thing. But it is a good idea to have the FAQ and using videos to answer your clients’ top questions is a great strategy. What are ten questions about copywriting tips that a client you hear most often asks you and what are ten questions you think they should ask as internet entrepreneur? So what are ten questions they do ask and what are ten questions you think they should ask?

Record an optimize press review video answering each one of those. When you get clients asking you, instead of you giving the same answer over and over again, just send them the link and say go watch this YouTube video. It’s still so new that people love it. One of our clients, Garry is doing it for his print management company. What print management company do you know that would email you back a YouTube link to explain the loupe, like a little magnifying glass? We did a video for that for Garry. There are different questions like that.

What is the difference between going to a traditional print house rather than going to a print broker? Why would you go to a print broker? Just like you might go to a mortgage broker because he’s got access to a whole bunch of different lenders and he can get you the best rate, similarly you go to a print broker because he has access to all of these different printers and he can get you the best printing price. We made a video about that as well as our tried and tested copywriting tips. That ends up getting in our autoresponder sequence and it also gets sent out to clients as well as the questions come up.

As you’re building your website, just remember it’s not about you, it is about applying these copywriting tips to your advantage. A lot of people will try and make their logo in the top left hand corner really massive. It might be Bob’s Pies or something like that or a name that might not even necessarily relate to what the product and service is. You wouldn’t want to have a massive Willows sign in the top left hand corner because what does Willows mean? For them, they don’t know what Willow means yet and the name isn’t built into what the product or service offering is.

Melbourne SEO Services, at least there you know what that service offering is. I still don’t make a huge deal of my name. It’s not about me, it’s not about having my Mum go to the website and say, look, Dave’s name is up in lights. It’s about the client, always thinking about the client, think about the avatar. When you write the copy on your website, write it as though you’re writing to one person. When I create communication online, it’s all about thinking about marketing to a favourite client of mine, Garry.

I want to make sure I know about Garry regarding his views on seo web development. He’s got two kids, he’s married, he runs his own business, it’s got I think a $2,000,000 to $3,000,000 turnover. He drives a good car, he takes good breaks, he’s got a business coach. That is my target market. When I market to him, I have that in mind and I write as though I’m writing to him.

So you don’t use terms like ‘we’ and ‘you guys’ and things like that in your copy. As part of copywriting tips, it is all about writing to the person as though you’re writing it to your friend. Have you got a problem with a fat stomach? Do you look at yourself in the mirror and not see the six pack like you used to see it when you were sixteen? I know how you feel. I had the same problem, then I started to go to Willows gym and solved that problem and now I’ve got a six pack that you can crack an egg on.

Writing something like that talks to the person as opposed to some generic type of thing. Write it to an eighth grade level as well. Don’t try and get fancy with your copy, don’t try and use ambiguity, don’t do anything that is confusing.

I remember someone who used to work with me, he used to write some blog posts and things like that, we talked about these copywriting tips. He wrote something in the copy that had a double meaning. I had not heard of it before the way that he was using the terminology. I said, I haven’t used it and he said, everybody knows that. I said, yes, but I don’t really know that. I just remember saying to him, it’s not about you thinking that everybody knows that term or being fancy or clever or something like that. It’s always about the individual. So write it back to the individual.
