Colleges and universities require opinion essays from their students. For those who have never written one, this may seem like a daunting task but in truth, it really isn’t. We will provide you with a simple guideline on how you can start and finish writing an effectual opinion essay.

Structure
There are many structures used by teachers and students when it comes to making an opinion essay, but today’s most commonly used structure uses the following:
1. Introduction
Here you need to give your reader a clear idea of your topic and outline your arguments. In the introduction, it is required that you clearly inform your reader about your stand on the topic and simply elaborate it later on in the body.
2. Main body
Arguments should be expressed in detail in the main body. The argumentation structure should include: part 1- your personal views, and part 2-other people’s views. In addition, you need to include opposing views in the main body and refute them accordingly. Use qualified references and data to make your arguments valid and justified.
3. Conclusion
The conclusion must recap your arguments and offer a good closing statement that will leave readers pondering on your message.

In addition to the aforementioned parts of an essay, it is also required to include a catchy title that would entice people to read it, and do not forget the reference pages as well.

Topics for Opinion Essays
While some academic institutions take control over the topics that a student can choose from, more often than not, you are free to select your own topic for the essay although it is recommended to pick one that you are knowledgeable and passionate of. It can be a hobby, favorite computer game, your most-loved sports, shopping, real estate, or just about any thing you would like to write on. There are teachers and professors who will require you to submit a short list of your preferred topics and they will assign one based on that list.

Do’s and Don’ts on Opinion Essay Writing
Just as there are basic writing etiquettes, there are also things you can and cannot do when making an opinion essay. First of all, do not be overly personal with the content of the essay. While the content should focus on your opinions, it is recommended that you refrain yourself from giving a lot of details about your personal life. Second, stay on topic. Do not provide unnecessary information that will only confuse the reader; stick to your point. Lastly, do not let emotions rule your content. Attacking others, using aggressive writing tone, and making moral adjustments are best avoided to maintain a high level of professionalism.

A very well written opinion essay is one that is thoroughly researched and carefully drafted. An essay that takes only a few hours to make is not going to give any student an A grade unless if this student happens to have an exceptional writing ability. Even so, it takes time and effort to create a good write up so if you need to submit one as a class requirement, see to it that you allot sufficient time in making it.
