There are many great advantages to article writing and article marketing. The problem usually is finding the motivation to start writing. There are a lot of good reasons to publish and article and I personally use them for motivation.

First of all I actually like writing. Still, there are days where no amount of love for the craft can get me past that blank screen. Those days are tough. These are the days where I know I have to force it. I also know that as soon I get past that it gets easier.

Since I love writing it’s my dream to make a living by doing so. I’m getting there, slowly, but I’m getting there. So articles are used to earn money, how? Well there are a number of different ways, but the fact is that money can easily be a motivation. A good motivation.

One of the ways to earn money writing articles is by getting paid by someone to write it. That’s an awesome motivator. Not only do you get some additionalcash flow when the article is done, you now also have a deadline. Deadlines are one of the best motivators I know of.

Articles are also a great tool for promotion. Whether it’s self promotion or promotion of a product or a business. Being a published author does wonders for your credibility as I’ll be getting into. So getting cheap promotion is another great motivator.

One of the things you can promote through an article is a website. Now most article directories don’t like a lot of promotion in the article, but you’re allowed to have a link to your website in the author box. Not only does that allow people who read the article and click the link to visit your website. It also increases the amount of one way links to your website.

The credibility gained by publishing an article can not be underestimated. If people like what you write they will see you as an authority on the subject. Being an authority earns you trust, which may lead to purchases, site visits and so on.

Who would you rather buy a product from. Somebody you don’t know at all or somebody who is a know authority in her field? That was an easy one, wasn’t it? Becoming an authority through article writing will not only give your site more visitors it will also make buyers out of potential customers.

Maybe you’re not trying to sell anything. Maybe you just need to reinforce your position as an expert (that’s still selling though). Articles can do that too.

So you don’t want to gain anything for yourself. You just want to raise awareness about a subject. That’s great! That probably means you’re emotionally involved in the subject. Being emotionally involved is the greatest motivator there is.

If none of the above motivates you then what? Well, maybe article writing isn’t for you. However, there is one trick that can usually get me going when all else fails. Taking a walk. Yeah, that’s right! Taking a short walk usually gets my head spinning with ideas that I just have to write about.

Have you joined the ranks of aspiring authors ready to take the next step to self publishing in the digital age of publishing? If so, congratulations! But wait, before you rush off to press, there are some things you should do to prepare your book for successful self-publishing. The preparation step of the self-publishing process includes everything you need to do to your book manuscript before you deliver it to the book printer. This includes deciding your publishing goals.

For example, is your book a personal family history book that you plan to sell to a few friends and family? Or do you plan to mass-market your book to the world? After deciding your market then you should avoid the following common mistakes:

1. Failure to write a Business Plan
This is where your book publishing journey should begin. You don’t have to start with a 15-page document. But do create an outline of all the costs that you will encounter in the self-publishing process.

Outline your costs before publication, after publication and everything from the beginning costs to the shipping price of mailing a book. This is the time you decide whether you should print a small amount of books for family or set up a small publishing company by buying a block of ISBNs.

2. Failure to get ISBN Numbers.
An ISBN number is what identifies you as a book publisher. Currently, it is the only way you can be considered a self-publisher in the publishing industry. At the time of this writing, no one can give, assign or sell you ISBNs except RR Bowker, the U.S. ISBN agency.

3. Failure to invest in Book Editing.
Don’t cut corners here. Invest in your book; get it professionally edited. Copy or line editing will bring your manuscript up to professional standard. Don’t settle for just having your family member take a look at your manuscript.

4. Failure to hire a book designer for book layout.
The book layout is what structures the content of your book and makes it look like a book. Again invest in your book project; this is not the time to settle for anything less than a professional look. If your book looks sloppy, it will limit its success in the market.

5. Failure to create bound galleys for reviews.
Bound galleys, limited run book proofs, are often unedited and used to get book reviews before the publication date of your book. Also, bound galleys do not have a laminated full color cover.

6. Failure to get your book proofread.
Beginner publishers skip this step in preparing their book for publication. Professional publishers know not to skip this step. A book full of errors can cost you in sales later on–including loss of respect for your important message.

Proofreading is not the same as editing; only done after the book designer formats or lays out your book into pages. The proofreader looks at word breaks and sentence layout. Some minor corrections missed in the first line edit may also be made.

7. Failure to invest in cover design.
75% of 300 booksellers reviewed (half from independent bookstores and half from chains) recognized the look and design of the book cover as the most important part. They agreed the jacket is prime real estate for promoting a book. On that note, your book cover design has great importance. It can cause your book marketing campaign to fail or succeed. So, I encourage you to get your book cover professionally designed.

Are you ready to publish your book successfully? Did you consider all your options including a business plan and book cover design? Great! Now that you know how to set up your book for full speed ahead self-publishing, go ahead take the plunge. Don’t wait any longer. Start today. Your audience is waiting for YOUR unique message and viewpoint. Make it different. Make it count. Make it yours.

When you craft your book to be a bestseller, everyone involved i.e. you (the author), the publisher and the bookseller, are sure to make good money. A bestseller is the result of countless small decisions. Individually, none of these decisions would determine the overall success of the book. It is the collective whole of many good decisions that gives you a shot at creating a bestseller.

As an author, writing a bestseller is challenging and you need to mentally prepare yourself for the challenge. Your book is more likely to succeed, if it is written for being published as a ‘lead book’ in a particular market segment rather than as a book simply meant for a market segment. Your book need not be very large. However, it should provide solid, complete and comprehensive content to qualify as a bestseller. The terms solid, comprehensive and complete are relative and refer to whatever you as an author have set out to accomplish in your book.

Before you publish your title, you need to do a lot of homework along with your publisher. It is critically essential that you acquire a full understanding of your target market segment. If you are unable to understand, what your target audience desires from you, failure is imminent. There is a tendency to define book markets as being comprised of people with identical/similar needs. The fact is that the content needs of people within a market segment vary quite substantially. Therefore, your bestseller, even when remaining focused, should be able to accommodate the needs of the broad spectrum of readers within the targeted market segment.

Different people adopt different approaches to reading books. Some people simply browse through a book till they find something interesting. Others may prefer sequential reading. Your bestseller should make it easy for the reader to find whatever he is looking for. Depending on the category of your book, you can include a brief table of contents, notes, illustrations, tips, sub-headings, cross-references and examples. You can provide an outline at the beginning of each chapter, in addition to tabs, appendices, glossaries, running heads etc. to help the reader quickly find the desired information. Every page should be packed full with information in a well-designed manner that is logical, elegant and easy on the reader’s eyes.

When you want your book to be a bestseller, it is critical that you break new ground in your writing. It means including ideas that are new, different and unique and meant to deliver more than what the book promises. The fact is that there are very few ideas that are completely new. In book publishing, ideas from every aspect of life are borrowed and modified as an ongoing process in the creation of new books. The crux is to develop and incorporate a few new ideas to clearly differentiate your book and make it stand out in the pack available in the market.

Even if your book is well authored, its chances of being published as a bestseller are dramatically enhanced when you have well-established connections with vendors and other industry experts.
